Draft Grade: B
Heading into the 2007 Draft, Minnesota's needs were for offensive playmakers, specifically at QB and RB. QB Brady Quinn was on the board when they selected at #7, but the Vikes couldn't pass on a talent like RB Adrian Peterson, a true workhorse who will power the Minnesota offense for years to come. And in need of more playmakers, Minnesota nabbed massive WR Sidney Rice with their second round pick. Smart move by the Vikes, who finally have playmakers for the offense, even if no one can get them the ball consistently. Rice teams with fellow South Carolina alum Troy Williamson, a first round pick by the Vikings back in 2005. CB Marcus McCauley, once considered a potential first round choice, was a solid value round pick in the third frame, especially considering the offseason loss of former starter Fred Smoot. Again, considering Minnesota's shaky QB situation, they should have found someone who could compete with Jackson for the starting job. They could have done much, MUCH better than Tyler Thigpen. But day two wasn't a total loss for the Vikes as OLB Rufus Alexander has the potential to be an impact performer, as does WR Aundrae Allison. Does drafting three WRs tell you anything about the confidence (or lack thereof) the coaching staff has in receivers already on the roster?
