Draft Grade: B
|
| New head coach Mike Tomlin had a very productive
first draft for the Steelers. After losing Joey Porter,
the need to replace him was obvious, as was the need to
find more ferocious edge-rushers like Porter. The Steelers
found their men with the first two picks, drafting OLB Lawrence
Timmons in round one and LaMar Woodley in round
two. Timmons is an exceptional athlete who can cover and
pass-rush with equal effectiveness. The Steelers will love
his athleticism and range from one OLB position. Woodley
was an intriguing pick as well. A DE at Michigan, Woodley
was one of the nation's premiere pass-rushers, but quests
about his size landed him in that dreaded 'tweener category.
He has enough speed to transition to OLB in the NFL and
continue his dominance as an edge-rusher, but don't count
on him for much in coverage. TE Matt Spaeth was a
solid round three pick as he'll make a very strong compliment
to former first round pick Heath Miller. All-American and
two-time Ray Guy award winner (awarded annually to the nation's
top college Punter), Daniel Sepulveda was a solid
pick in round four. D lineman Ryan McBean was also
a smart day two choice as he has the size and versatility
to play either DT or DE on Pitt's 3-4 front. CB William
Gay has sleeper potential and should provide the Steelers
with quality depth in the secondary. The Steelers will be
sorry they didn't land a RB in this Draft as Willie Parker
desperately needs a compliment in the backfield. It's not
often that the #1 Wide Receiver on a National Championship
team is available to you late in round seven, but Pittsburgh
found that to be the case when they landed Dallas Baker,
whith whom they should be pleasantly surprised. |
