Draft Grade: A
The Raiders had a very active and very impressive first day of drafting during the 2007 spectacle of stars. Al Davis finally (and wisely) landed the franchise QB they haven't had in a good long while. LSU's JaMarcus Russell was a solid choice. With Culpepper-like skills, Russell will be a high-impact player in the NFL and he should enjoy the company of Jerry Porter and the draft day-acquired Mike Williams and TE Zach Miller, Oakland's round two choice, a tough receiver who can handle the middle of the field and block exceptionally well. In need of a compliment to Derrick Burgess at the other DE position, Oakland nabbed an absolute steal by landing Quentin Moses with the first pick in round three. Moses owns tremendous size and skills but a so-so Senior season resulted in his decline down Draft boards. Rest assured, Moses will be a pleasant surprise in the NFL. To close out day one, Oakland landed another steal in speedy receiver Johnnie Lee Higgins. One thing's for sure, Russell will have plenty of capable receivers to throw to, just as he did at LSU. On day two, Oakland made a lot of noise by landing RB Michael Bush with the first pick of the fourth round. Bush had first round talent but a broken leg limited him to one game in 2006. Once fully healed, Bush will be a bruising RB and excellent compliment to Russell in the backfield. Also on day two, Oakland promptly dealt unhappy receiver Randy Moss to New England for another fourth round choice, used to select…Cincinnati CB John Bowie? What is the NFL world coming to when Bowie is the equivalent of Randy Moss???!!! At any rate, a solid draft for the Raiders, who are rebuilding with some very capable talent.
