Draft Grade: D
|
| When Draft Day '07 kicked off, New England
had more total picks than any other team. Then they dealt
out of the first, second and third rounds, mystifying everyone
despite having ample needs to address. Thankfully the Pats
had a very strong offseason in free agency, bringing in
talented vets like Adalius Thomas and Donte Stallworth to
name a few. With their first pick, New England nabbed superstar
talent Brandon Meriweather who can play Free or Strong
Safety and cover as well as any other Safety in this class.
Meriweather has been plagued by character issue but you
know Belichick will straighten him out in a hurry. Meriweather
was the only day one pick for the Pats so they didn't get
much bang for their buck. But speaking of bucks, they spent
most of their money in the free agent market, so funds were
tight when it came to draft picks, which is why their next
pick didn't come until day two. The Pats missed out on a
first day MLB prospect needed to be the heir apparent to
veteran Tedy Bruschi. The Pats made more noise on day two
when they dropped the bomb on everyone, dealing a fourth
round pick to Oakland in exchange for Randy Moss, who made
it known that New England was the only destination he would
accept if he were to rework his contract. So the Pats land
Moss, creating far more waves in trades and free agency
than they did on Draft Day. New England did have some notable
day two picks however, including another Hurricane alum
DT Kareem Brown, a solid prospect who could play
inside or out along New England's 3-4 front. Overall, do
keep in mind that New England's grade reflects their actual
draft performance and not their offseason, free agency and
trade acquisitions, for which they earn an A+. |
