Draft Grade: A+
|
| One of the biggest winners of the 2007 Draft,
Carolina drafted three players with first round talent.
LB Jon Beason will be a terror in the NFL and should
fill the void of Will Witherspoon. Considering Dan Morgan's
lack of durability and the fact that converted Strong Safety
Thomas Davis is still learning the LB position, Beason will
not only be called upon for major contributions on defense,
but also leadership of the back seven. He has the potential
to play at a Jonathan Vilma-type level. In round two, Carolina
wasted no time drafting WR Dwayne Jarrett of USC.
The knock on Jarrett was his so-so 40-yard dash time. But
he's the perfect example of why a forty time can mean almost
nothing when it comes to talent evaluation. For three years,
Jarrett light it up at USC, dominating every corner he faced
with either his speed, his size, his route-running skills
or his sheer determination. Jarrett will be a very special
receiver, and behind Calvin Johnson, he should go down as
the most prolific and productive receiver of this class.
The Panthers were very fortunate to land him at #45. Also
in round two, the Panthers landed another All-American in
Ryan Kalil, the top Center in this class who should
contend for the starting job as a rookie. In round three,
Carolina found a very good situational pass-rusher in Georgia's
Charles Johnson, who when teamed with All-Pro Julius
Peppers on the other end, will wreak havoc on opposing passers.
Considering how strong their first day was, Carolina didn't
need to do much on day two, though they did obtain a solid
return specialist in Ryne Robinson and another versatile
tackling machine in LB Tim Shaw. Overall, an exceptional
draft for the Panthers. |
