Draft Grade: F
After losing Ahman Green prior to the Draft, Green Bay knew they had to set their sites on finding his replacement, but the only first round talents (Adrian Peterson and Marshawn Lynch) were drafted prior to Green Bay's selection at #16. Because of that, they wisely opted to address their second most critical need…an anchor for the D line and someone who could fill the gaps of opposing run games. Their choice was DT Justin Harrell, a stud up front whose only area of concern was a serious shoulder injury (and surgery) during the 2006 season. Harrell will bounce back to full health in no time and become a high impact player in the middle of Green Bay's frontline of defense. The Packers took a big swing with their next two selections but whiffed on both occasions. RB Brandon Jackson, an early declaration who shared carries at Nebraska, is not the answer to fill Ahman Green's shoes. Green Bay would have been wiser had they gambled on Louisville's Michael Bush, a Heisman candidate entering the 2006 season who suffered a broken leg and missed the majority of the season. Bush has a dominant running style when healthy, and the Packers would have been able to use his services in most of 2007 and years beyond. Perhaps realizing their misguided optimism in Jackson, the Packers drafted another RB (Deshawn Wynn) in round seven. The Pack missed the boat again with the selection of WR James Jones in round three. The Packers definitely needed another receiver, but better value was out there. Redeeming themselves slightly, Green Bay spent their final day one pick on Aaron Rouse, a ferocious Strong Safety who should improve a shaky secondary. Green Bay had a decent day two, landing All-American Kicker Mason Crosby. Overall, however, Green Bay drafted a DT with medical issues and a pair of Running Backs neither of whom have proven enough to be able to adequately fill the team's need. WR was another major need that was addressed with poor talent.
