Draft Grade: A-
Perhaps no team addressed their needs as concisely as the Jaguars during Draft weekend. The offseason loss of Safety Deon Grant was a tough pill to swallow, but the Jags responded well by drafting Florida's Reggie Nelson with their first pick. Nelson is a gifted playmaker who will fill the void nicely. With injuries and a lack of depth plaguing Jacksonville's LB corps, they made a wise choice with their second round pick, landing Hampton's Justin Durant, a tackling machine with good athleticism and the ability to play either MLB or OLB. And the Jags will be pleasantly surprised with third round choice WR Mike Walker, who has good speed, athleticism and attitude. Walker has big time sleeper potential. The Jags did very well on day two, addressing some important needs, first by landing pass-rushing specialist Brian Smith from Missouri. Smith was nightmare for opposing QBs during his college days before suffering an injury that cost him most of his Senior season. Once healthy, Smith will serve Jacksonville well by chasing down opposing QBs from either the DE or rush-OLB position. Safety Josh Gattis was a great value round pick in the fifth frame. He and first round draftee Reggie Nelson should make a solid tandem at the Safety positions for years to come in Jacksonville. DT Derek Landri was another high value pick in round five. Landri will make a very competent, very physical backup to the league's best DT duo of Stroud and Henderson.
