Draft Grade: C
|
| Miami made the first big "wow" move
of the 2007 NFL Draft, electing to pass on QB Brady Quinn
and take flashy returnman and receiver Ted Ginn with
the 9th overall selection. Ginn has the speed and flare
to immediately replace Wes Welker in the return game and
eventually become Miami's compliment to Chris Chambers at
wideout. Passing on Quinn, Miami addressed their QB need
in round two with the addition of BYU's John Beck,
a mature, precision passer with average arm strength but
good smarts. If he has enough talent around him, Beck can
be a productive NFL starter, but he's not the type of QB
to carry a club on his shoulders (ala Tom Brady, Peyton
Manning, etc.). Following up on the Beck pick, Miami nabbed
a mauling interior O lineman in Samson Satele, who
can start right away at either Center or Guard. Lacking
a compliment/backup to Ronnie Brown, Miami wisely spent
their third round choice on elusive rusher Lorenzo Booker.
Day two was only average for Miami's Draft. They missed
out on landing a TE (needed due to the loss of starter Randy
McMichael in free agency) and a young LB to provide depth
behind a solid starting threesome of veterans, though seventh
rounder Kelvin Smith from Syracuse has decent upside
as MLB backup behind Thomas. |
