Draft Grade: F
Dallas drafts poorly for the second consecutive year. With their first round pick, the Cowboys landed hybrid DE / OLB Anthony Spencer, a pass-rushing specialist destined for an OLB position in Dallas' 3-4. The only problem is, that role is already filled quite nicely by former first-rounder DeMarcus Ware. The 2007 Draft marks the third straight year Dallas has drafted a LB in the first round round (Ware in 2005 and Bobby Carpenter in 2006). The LB corps is already one of the best in the business, so how, when and where Spencer will fit in remains a mystery. OTs James Marten and Doug Free were nice additions as both have impressive talent but both are best suited for the Right (weakside) Tackle position. Is Tony Romo really the future of this offense? Is he the answer or more of a one-night stand type of player? The honeymoon will soon be over and drafting competition for him at QB would have made a lot of sense, but Dallas went for Washington's Isaiah Stanback, who has about as much promise as an undrafted free agent, and Dallas actually wasted a fourth round pick on him! The Cowboys also have a major need for a #3 Corner, yet they waited until round seven before pulling the trigger on obtaining a DB. And with Glenn and Owens aging at the WR positions, and absolutely no legitimate #3 target or backup, the Cowboys totally ignored their need for another receiver.
