Draft Grade: B+
|
| All things considered, Indy had a very strong
draft, making up for two years of poor draft performance.
Though Indy may not have prioritized their needs accordingly,
they had a very strong showing on day one, only missing
out on a LB. They needed a starting OLB even during the
2006 Championship season. Matters were made worse when they
lost All-Pro Cato June in free agency prior to the draft.
While they should have filled that void, other critical
needs were addressed very well, starting with the addition
of speedy receiver Anthony Gonzalez, the final pick
of round one. Number 32 overall may have been a bit high
for Gonzalez, who only started one season at Ohio State,
but the Colts are hoping his speed in the slot position
will come in handy for Manning, who lost Brandon Stokley
in free agency. Gonzalez has speed and hands comparable
to Stokley. The Colts then traded back into round two to
land talented OT Tony Ugoh. The addition of this
pick will cost the Colts a first rounder in 2008, but Dungy
& Company are hoping Ugoh will become the next Tarik
Glenn, who is still playing at an All-Pro level but starting
to show his age. Indy made a killing in round three despite
ignoring the OLB position yet again. CB Daymeion Hughes
was a major steal in round three. Hughes, the PAC-10 Defensive
Player of the year in 2006, has first round skills but fell
down boards because he lacks blazing speed. In Indy's cover
two scheme, however, that won't matter as Hughes can handle
the zone with tremendous competence. A great pick, especially
considering the offseason loses of '06 starting CBs Nick
Harper and Jason David. Don't be surprised if Hughes becomes
a fixture in Indy's starting rotation. DT Quinn Pitcock,
also drafted in round three, is the massive run-stuffer
the Colts D needs. Pitcock will be a solid compliment to
Anthony McFarland in the middle. As good as Indy's day one
draft was, day two left a lot to be desired. The LB position
for the most part, went totally ignored. Clint Session
was not the answer Indy was looking for. Indy's only real
mistake was ignoring a RB. The loss of Rhodes means Addai
must go it alone as the starter, and he has no legitimate
backup. |
