Draft Grade: B
San Diego was one of the few teams that didn't have a lot of major needs entering the 2007 Draft. The team with the best record in the AFC in 2006 returns relatively intact (with the exception of a rebuilt coaching staff), but they did lose three veterans in the offseason: MLB Donnie Edwards, WR Keenan McCardell and Safety Terrence Kiel. So what did they do? Spent their first three picks on replacements at those positions. In round one, they landed Craig Davis from LSU. Davis wasn't projected as a first rounder, but he does have talent and should become a solid starter for the Chargers. Still, better value could have been had in local products Dwayne Jarrett or Steve Smith, both of USC and both of whom were still available when San Diego selected Davis. The Chargers then traded heavily to move up in round two and land a Safety they coveted in Eric Weddle, who spent time at CB and Free Safety during his college career at Utah. Weddle will make a great FS for San Diego. MLB Anthony Waters was a brilliant pick in round three. Waters missed his Senior season in 2006 because of an injury, but had he played, he likely would've graded out as a late first round or early second round prospect. With a little time, he should have no trouble taking over one of San Diego's MLB spots in the 3-4 defense. TE Scott Chandler was a great value pick in round four. Chandler will make a very competent backup behind Gates. Had San Diego spent a pick on an O lineman, they would have come very close to Draft perfection.
